Ryno Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Well after striping all the paint on the mowing deck and priming in white, i noticed how pitted the deck is and im now thinking about body filling and pounding out the dents... Am i nuts or what? Think the stripper fumes are getting to me.... :I
HubbardRA Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 If it is a work tractor, I would not use body filler. The filler will scratch or gouge too easily on a mower deck because of the abuse they take. I would pound out the dents. If this is a show tractor, then make it look pretty!!
MrSteele Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Perhaps a work/show tractor? Use something that went out of use in the middle ages, why not? If you use lead to fill the gouges and rough spots, the lead will prove much harder than Bondo, will be a bit more difficult to work, but. When completed, you will have a slightly heavier deck, and the gouges and rough spots will be much tougher than if filled with plastic filler. I think I am telling my age, as I might have been the in last of the lead sledders.
OldFarmTractor Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Rather than using lead can you use brazing rod?
firefoxz1 Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Check out this post. It may be worth it but he isn't done testing it for the summer yet. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=60662
Ryno Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 Yeah u guys are probably right wasnt going to body filler in the underside just the top of the deck where the noticable pitting is the underside you really dont see until the end of the season when your scraping the stuck grass off...
HubbardRA Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Ryno, I was talking about the outside. There are sections of my mower where the paint is worn off on the outside, from mowing up againsts shrubbery and landscape timbers, etc. If you are only mowing grass in an open area and not mowing up close to or against any type of edging that it may rub against, then it may hold up. My mower decks do get beat up somewhat. Catching a deck on a tree root, or getting it wedged when mowing around a ditch can flex it enough that it may pop bondo loose. These are the things I was talking about. I never even considerded that someone would put bondo on the bottom side of a deck.
Ryno Posted May 19, 2006 Author Posted May 19, 2006 Yeah i understand what your saying hubbard, its probably not worth the time and effort if the deck is actually gonna be used. So i think ill just paint it, just been toying around with ideas since the paint has all been stripped and the whole deck is sitting in primer waiting... Cant wait to get humpty dumpty back together again... -Ryan-
