LesH Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 I am working on a Kohler 12 HP horizontal shaft engine and noticed the person before me tightened the spark plug in at an angle...... I removed the head then took the plug out and then used my trusty Heli Coil special tap for the Heli Coil insert. Tapped thru existing hole, no problems. Then installed insert, it appeared to be loose on the first threads then tighten up holding on the last several threads, then staked (or flared) out the top of the insert using the tool in the kit. Now it seems to hold tight. (Plug thread is 14 MM X 1.25)Looks like I did it right.... Any comments or experiences anyone has had with these??
firefoxz1 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Did you use a solid plug insert kit or just the loose spring like insert? I have had problems keeping the springy type in the head, they usually come out with the plug if the plugs been in for awhile. Other than that I haven't had a plug blow out of the head with either one and they do seal with no blowby.
stevei46 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I have had the same thing happen also useing helicoils, i started useing the solid ones. i can't remember the brand name but my local parts store was able to sell me just one, and you are able to use a regular tap not a special sized one like comes with helicoils. and to install it you use a sparkplug. you did nothing wrong
