blackfarms1 Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Recently purchased a 9020. Owner said the engine is tired and had not used the tractor in over 3 years. I took it home put a battery on it took breather off shot wd-40 in it and it fired right up. Drove it around for a while no leaks bad noises etc. Put on mower deck and everything is fine but when get into tall grass motor pulls down and smokes. If you catch it quickly reduce throttle to idle for few seconds open it back up good to go. What gives?
D-17_Dave Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Sounds like a gas starvation problem there are lots of things to check. But if your resurecting this tractor after being sat still for so long you'll save yourself some grief later by replaceing the points and cond. setting the timeing correctly and then checking for restictions and debris in the fuel system. Also the mech. fuel pumps are know for trouble since they are so old so most of us go with a new style electric one. Check out my post on that in the tech tips section. Once you've completed these steps try it again. In the long run you'll be glad you went through these obvious things.
eagle5473 Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I'am with dave I had the same problem I tend to think its the timing, but replace the fuel pump for $30 from NAPA
Marty-MN Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I would go with Dave's advise. I've had both fuel and points give these problems on cck's
JimS Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 When it pulls down, what color is the smoke. Black would indicate a carb problem, blue an engine problem. Any idea how many hours are on engine?
