Chris727 Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 Hi. The only place I have found with .030 over rings (NLA) for my 10hp briggs is TEW. They have them in the prime line brand. Before I buy I was wondering if anyone has had good or bad experiences with TEW. Thanks in advance. Chris
HubbardRA Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Chris, If they are the only ones who have the parts you need, then what other choice do you have? You need the parts to get that machine up and running again. Even a bad experience with a company, if you get the parts you need, is better than no parts. Go for it.
RayS Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Chris, if the rings that you need are part number 299092 they are still available thru Briggs. they cost $42.28 or at least that what I can get them for.
powerking_one Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Chris, I have purchased a couple of Prime-Line ring sets for my Kohler K-91's and they are made in China (hence their cheap(er) price than OEM Kohler). The P.L. part numbers also happened to interchange with some Brigg applications. They didn't have the 4 piece oil ring or expander on the 2nd compression ring like the Kohler OEM ones. Are they not the same quality as OEM? Definately. Will they work? Yes. Will they be as durable and yield the same service life as OEM? Probably not. Tom (PK)
Chris727 Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 Ray, most of the databases I searched, the briggs # came up as no good, so I figured they were out of production. As for aftermarket vs. stock, I have heard both good and bad, some people swear by aftermarket:), and some swear at aftermarket}:). I have a set of primeline 12hp rings and they have a 3 piece automotive style oil ring while the briggs had a 2-piece, some people like them better, and I think the aftermarket are chrome, the original are not. My 10hp is near the end of its life, it is .030 over and the cylinder is slightly worn. The ring gap was about twice the reject size so I'm hoping to slow the oil consumption and get a few more years out of it, it doesn't have to be perfect. Thank You. Chris
MrSteele Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I have used OEM and I have used aftermarket. I picked up a set of aftermarket, Primeline, today, simply because of price. The rings seem to be made at least as well as OEM for the compression rings, and the 3 piece oil ring is, in my opinion an advancement over original. But, you have to remember, that I like the automotive style oil ring much better that the OEM Briggs. The engine I have is a 240000 series. Rings from Briggs are available at my parts man for $70 or so, Primeline was $29 plus tax. Primeline has been running for several years with no trouble in a late model I/C engine I also run weekly for sevral hours.
