Kolher M20 ?

Went to start the D/A 1920 and had a sparks shower. Sparks came from the starter solenoid. Now it won't do anything. Jumped across the solenoid nothing. Jumped straight from the battery to the starter nothing. I have the wiring harness disconnected so it should at least crank???? Do these starters fail so sudden and drastically? What am I missing? Steve

Straight from a good battery to the starter should at least draw current and spark even if it the starter did not turn. Sounds like internal short in starter fried starter, hope it easy to pull.
