Roy Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Are solid copper head gaskets available for a Briggs Model 19??? I've popped three standard head gaskets on my B-1. Last one failed as I was pulling into the garage. My head has been "hand milled" several times and I always chamfer the head bolt thread holes in the block and check it for flatness. Timing is slightly advanced; wants to kick back when starting. And it runs hot due to a lot of WOT operation. Despite all this I need to cure the problem. Thanks,
D-17_Dave Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 By what you describe I'd say the timings a little too high. High timeing will blow a head gasket quickly on a small engine. Plus it should run cooler dureing WOT.
HubbardRA Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Roy, It sounds like the head bolts need a little more torque than you have been using. I have never blown a head gasket. We ran several engines in our pulling tractors with the heads milled .060, and never had any problems. I do use a different method of torquing the head bolts. PM me and we'll discuss this.
