hot gas

One of my tractor type friends was mowing this past weekend when his Snapper rider started to sputter. Thinking he was running low on gas he limped back to the shed to fill up. He shut of the mower and when he removed the gas cap there was a slight pressure in the tank and when he looked in the tank he was not out of gas but he said the gas was boiling. Has anyone else had this happen? ?

Do you think he might have misinterpeted vacuum for pressure? In theory, a clogged cap vent would lead to a vacuum in the tank, which if deep enough, could cause the fuel to boil under the vacumm. Of course any heat in the tank would make it worse,as would High RVP gasoline from winter. I'm not sure you could get this to happen, but I have made methanol boil at RT under vaccuum...just to see if I could! Free opinion, worth all I charged paid for it:D
