Mick14 Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Maybe someone here can help,,i have a 64 broadmoor with what i have always assumed was a 6hp engine,,i blew the plug out of the head,i went to the best shop in the area and thier computer showed the briggs #s to be a 10hp.,,everone in the shop that looked at the old head said it was either an 8 or 10,,,they did a great job of locating a new head-- which they said is for a 10hp,,the number came off the shroud---142702 ,,is this possible ? thanks
richp Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 A 64 should be a 9 hp. Model 23D. It wouldn't surprise me if a late 64 had a 10hp.
Mick14 Posted June 2, 2006 Author Posted June 2, 2006 Thanks Rich,Its not that i doubted these guys, the manual i have says it should be a 6hp. I discovered that the cylinder is scored so i'm looking at rings and atleast honing . Mick
firefoxz1 Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 That would be a 14CI engine which would be a 6HP. The first one or two digits is the CI of the engine. 2 would be the basic design. 7= Vertical shaft with mechanical governor. 0=plain bearing,non-flange mount. 2=rewind starter. There should be a chart somewhere on the net but with a quick search I didn't find any. Rich, this is a Broadmoor not a large frame tractor.
clyde Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Rich, are you thinking of a Landlord? A 64 Broaddmoor should have a 6HP model 146702. In any event it's easy to replace the verticals with another engine, which apparently happened here. Whoops - guess Tom and I had the same thought - and posted at the same time!!
PatRarick Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Mick, the numbers are for a 6hp engine. It is the "big block" version, very similar to the 7hp (17 cu. in.) and 8 hp (19 cu. in.). It's been a while since I worked on a 14 cu. in, but I don't believe the head is available anymore. When that engine was discontinued, I believe the short block repair was that of a 7 or 8 horse and you had to order a new head with the short block. Everything else off of the 14 cu. in. would install on the new short block. If the new head doesn't work out, PM me. I've got two 14 cu. in. horizontals here, so I have a used head. Pat
clyde Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Now I know you guys are trying to confuse me :D Pat, did you mean vertical? Here is a scan of the model # breakdown from my book. I thought I'd seen it here or on the web also but couldn't find it either.
gregc Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 I believe the 14 cu. in. cylinder head is still available. Briggs part no. 210578, MSRP $42.90.
firefoxz1 Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Clyde, The head wouldn't "care" if it was vertical or horizontal, LOL.
PatRarick Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 quote:Originally posted by clyde Now I know you guys are trying to confuse me :D Pat, did you mean vertical? Clyde, No, I have horizontals, but the heads would be the same. Greg, you are correct. It's still available and that's the same part number my parts book shows. Pat
clyde Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 One of the things I like about this site - I learn something almost every day, even when it's not about anything I'm working on. I never stopped to consider that the heads would be the same for both vertical and horizontal engines of the same displacement.
Mick14 Posted June 2, 2006 Author Posted June 2, 2006 Thanks Pat,I got the head and it fit fine--same part # that greg posted and same price.I'm guessing that the guys at the shop just haven't seen one of these in a very long time,it is a good size engine for a 6hp. and now i know i have to deal with the scored cylinder wall. thanks to you all. Mick
