portuncia Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I am buying a B112, 2 questions 1. What motors are available to re-power the tractor down the road? 2. Are there alot of transmission problems, can you find them new/used? What other problems may I run into? I am just getting started and haven't even moved onto the new property yet. I am ignorant and trying to come up to speed when it comes to small tractors. Thanks in advance for your help.
johnmonkey Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Welcome to the club. There are several motors to replace the original. I may be best to rebuild or have a rebuilt replacement motor. The transmission should be strong, however you may need to replace seals (to stop leakage)or somtimes the axle tube will break. There are plenty of people around to keep it running. It helps to have a spare tractor around (that is when you will get strange looks from "she who must be obeyed"). The best advice is to become a member and you can post pictures and have all the member privilidges(sp?). Good luck. JH
mhaubner Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I have a similar tractor. It has worked well for almost 40 years. Dont let the 12hp fool you these tractors have plenty of power for what ever you need them to do. Most if not all parts are available from a Simplicty dealer or through links on this site. These are very reliable machines. With maintance and a little care they will serve a long time. If the old engine goes rebuild it just my opinion. I have a hydro tans that has not needed anything in 40 years. The standard trans are more reliable. Hope this helps. Spend the 10 bucks to have access to this whole site. It is well worth the money.
portuncia Posted June 8, 2006 Author Posted June 8, 2006 Thank you for your responses, I am going to become a full fledged member. I will need all the help I can get. We are moving onto 5 acres in a month, about 1.5 is yard the rest for the horses and possible ATV fun. Starting out I thought I would have adequate funds to buy a 4x4 tractor and necessary equipement but my adequate funds have quickly erroded. This seems like a good fit for me, I am mechanically inclined so maintance will not be a problem. Next purchase will be a Johnny Bucket to increase its uses. Again thanks.
portuncia Posted June 9, 2006 Author Posted June 9, 2006 Do you know off hand what make and model of motors replace the original B&S
HubbardRA Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Most of the B/S and Kohler, cylinder engines that were built thru the 80s will fit in that chassis. I currently am running a Kohler K321 14Hp engine in my 61 Wards Squire. I can't say that the engines are a 100% direct bolt on. The Kohlers require some re-wiring because of the differences in ignition. The 12 Hp that you have can easily be replaced with a 16 HP B/S, if you can find a good used one. The one problem is that most of the B/S and Kohler engines, that are the best fit to that machine, have not been manufactured since the early 90s. Mainly your choice is limited primarily by your ability to do minor fabrication and rework. If you are a good designer/fabricator, then there are lots of possibilities. None of my three tractors, that I currently have in operation, have the original factory engine, none are the same horsepower rating, and two of them have different brand engines in them.
