On my recently aquired Simplicity 3112V, I was looking it over the other day and the lift lever has me confused. The lever will lock in the forward position with the notch in the mechanizm but there is no way to lock in the rear position. What keeps it there? What are all the holes for? I can't see where anything is missing on the lever but I can't see how it stays "up"

The forward position is the up position and To the rear is down for the mower deck and rear mounted attachments. There are no other notches as it is supposed to float in down position. The holes are for depth stops to control how far it will go down. For front mounted attachments, the rear position is up and forward is down The loop then drops over the rear of the quadrant to hold it up.

That "loop" that normally drops down into the notches should drop down over the back of the quadrant -- but it puts the lift lever in your gut to do so. The holes are for setting the height (or depth) of an attachment, similar to the draft control settings on the 3-point of a farm tractor...

A slightly different question on the handle, if I may. While I was freeing a few things up last year, using penetrating oil and a fine adjustment 6 pound hammer, I accidentally tapped the handle on an additional 1/8 inch or so. Short of taking the whole arrangement apart and putting it in a press to force it back into position, is there a good way to pull it back out? A 2 jaw puller is not the answer.

I have yet to put on the mower deck so I figured it must have a logical way of working but where the confusion lies is where "other" mowers have multiple stop points I guess.

Mr. Steele, I have found that if you can put a pry bar behind the collar, then use a large bolt or rod as a drift and hit the shaft, the collar will usually come off. Only problem is that it takes four hands. Hope you have a good sidekick to help with this. CHolmes, I use the drilled holes in the quadrant quite often when working with front attachments. This is especially true when driving to and from the work area or to suspend the attachment while I pull a trailer. I use a bolt that fits snug in the holes. Move the lever to lift the attachment, put the bolt in the nearest hole, release the tension from the lever, and the load of the attachment pushing against the bolt will hold things in place. This also allows you to lift the attachment part way and hold it, so that the handle isn't poking you in the chest. The newer ones have notches the whole way, but they will not float because of the notches. I have modified those so that I can insert a pin and make them float without latching. I find float is necessary when grading or pushing snow, and also with some other attachments.

Note that Simplicity mower decks ride on the ground using their full-width rear rollers when you're mowing. You adjust the cutting height using the big T-handle on each end of the bracket that holds those rollers. You don't adjust the cutting height using the lift lever... I just wanted to make sure you understood this, since the quadrant and lift lever have nothing to do with mowing, really... you use it for raising the deck for transport only.
