Deutz Allis Repower - Cooling Fan?

I am finishing up a repower of my 1920 with a Honda V-Twin. I like the way it works, and I think it will work just fine, and for now it has a side discharge muffler. That muffler arrangement did give me one thought, however, and wanted to see what some of you thought. It appears that I could get a small automotive electric radiator fan in between the cross bracing and the front screen in my hood. Has anybody tried doing this? I figured that such a fan would be cheap from a salvage yard, and could be mounted so that it pulled air from back to front and might help to keep the whole engine compartment cooler. Good idea? Bad idea?

I think Mike Fox did that to his powermax. JH

Aaron: Those look exactly like what I need. Was yours simple to install? Do you think it is effective? Also, did you wire it so that it runs all the time?

I bought the 9inch fan for my 720, I first used the install kit they sent, but it could not get tight enough I had some black zip ties and they worked great, mine is wired to a switch so I can use it when I am mowingect, and leave it off for the short moving around and while working on the tractor, less battry drain that way, I think it is a big help in getting the excess exhaust heat away from my 20hp Onan

Which way does the fan blow. Out or in?

I think that when I install mine I will set it to blow out, since that is the direction that the engine flywheel fan wants to move the air - from the rear of the tractor toward the front. Besides, I would not want all that heat blowing directly back on me when I was operating the tractor.

My fan blows out the front in the same direction of the engine fan, and so not to blow excess exhaust heat back on the engine

TimH - I just added a fan to my 20 HP Sunstar. I found that the 10" fan from Partzfinder fits perfectly in the grill. One thing you may wish to consider is to use a reverse polarity switch to operate the fan. The switch I used is "Off" in center position, makes the fan a pusher in the upper position, and a puller in the bottom position. This way, if the grill in front of the fan gets filled with grass clippings, you can simply reverse the fan and it self cleans! Actually, I really like the looks of the large vent holes in the Powermax grills - they would be less apt to collect clippings. I just got through with about 2 1/2 hrs of mowing and it is incredible how much blistering hot air this fan pushes out of the engine compartment. It is literally too hot to hold your hand in front of for more than a few seconds.
