Bonaro Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 I am in the process of replacing the bevel gears on my B-212 vari-drive. I got a spare set of gears and installed them in my old box using my old shafts and bearings.. I got everything back together they way it should be (I have a manual) but there is a problem. The driven shaft moves side to side at least 3/16 of an inch and the bevel gear goes with it. This aint gonna work because the gear lash is uncontrollable.. The problem is the ball bearing under the bevel gear, it moves in its bore. There has to be something that holds this thing down other that just the slip fit of the bore on the bearing. Any ideas? Also, my old box and the spare box I got the gears from had no shims anywhere, is this right?
RayS Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Does it move 3/16" on the bench or when it is installed in the tractor with the required shims and the side plate back on. In the picture you can see where the shims are located.
Bonaro Posted June 14, 2006 Author Posted June 14, 2006 On the bench... Wow, Your drawing is way better than mine. So if I get this right, the side plate compresses the shims into the seal which then presses the bearing tight. Also, No shims are used to adjust the gear lash This is strange...[:0]
firefoxz1 Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 If you are talking about the input shaft there should be a little square/retangular piece of metal and a 1/4 bolt that holds that bearing in. If the housing got worn there will still be slop but I have not seen any do that. Is the needle bearing and shaft near the seal OK? If you are talking about the output shaft, when the pulley is installed on the drive side with the aproppriate sleeve it pulls everything together.
RayS Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 The shims are in both pictures and G and F in the diagram. I have taken at least 15 to 20 of these apart and never have seen one yet that didn`t have shims in it. More than likely someone else at one time or another had yours apart.
Bonaro Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 I have shims F and G that fit on the outside of the seal but I found no shims anywhere else in the box. I would have expected some under the bearing T or on the gear side of bearing J. When I took the spare box apart I found a supply of .010 shims hanging on the output shaft. I guess this is where they put them after they couldn't figure out how to shim the gears.LOL I set it up last night with the spare shims and the contact is looking good, I'm gonna run it. Anybody have a guess on how much backlash the gearset oughtta have? Fairly tight or pretty sloppy?
RayS Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 There is no shims on the inside. Just what is in the diagrams. There is no need to shims the gears on new parts.
