firefoxz1 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Do the newer gear starter engines still have points? If so is the polarity on the flywheel atleast right to run a magnatron coil or would they have to be repolarized also? Is the taper on the flywheel the same so you could switch flywheels? Is the keyway in the same place?
D-17_Dave Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 I think all the parts you asked about are the same and interchangeable. As far as the polarity on the flywheel goes, my rule of thumb is that if the engine block does not have points the flywheel has been correctly polarized as the engine already has magnetron ignition. The coil and flywheel would therefor be able to be swapped out onto an older engine and loose the points if so desired. If it were me I'd also swap on the gear starter and charging system, especially on a worker tractor. I know it's not original but I rather like the sleek look of the clean engine side on my B-series without the starter/generator.
RayS Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 I have at least four 16hp (326437) they have the gear starter and they are all Magnatron. No points in the ones that I have. I think in 1981 sometime the eliminated the points.
sandyhillbill Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 I have a 326437 in my 7116h that is gear starter and originnally had points. It was new in 1981 and has been converted to electronic ign. Spec # 8107221
