randyvp Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Hi Everyone, I just found your site and wanted to get some opinions from the members. I have an Allis Chalmers 919 with a Kohler KT19 engine. I've bought it used about 15 years ago and it's been a fairly reliable machine. Last season it blew the rear crankshaft seal, I pulled the engine and replaced it and she's back on the job....but I think I have a bigger problem. I started noticing this last year as well and I think there is excess pressure in the crank case, I constantly have a little oil leaking and burning off the engine while running and I find oil in the air filter (coming from the crankcase ventilation tube). I suspect this pressure is what caused the seal to blow last season and I'm thinking I'm looking at a rebuild. My question is, is it worth rebuilding? I have considered trading it in but it's hard to find anything that compares, but my wife does like the fact the newer machines steer a little easier. If I sold it privately what would this machine be worth? I saw the repower kits which also look interesting but it is still a lot of money to lay out on an older machine. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Regards, Randy
RayS Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Check the crankcase breather. The cost of repower kits are real reasonable compared to what it would cost to replace the tractor with a machine that is of the same quality. There`s a post also this week where someone turn there breather tube down and hasn`t had problems since. http://simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=65031&SearchTerms=tube
randyvp Posted June 18, 2006 Author Posted June 18, 2006 Thanks for that link, it seems to make sense and I'll give it a try. It's amazing how many problems seem to be fairly common ones!! I suspect though that this may be more of a kluge than a fix...but as long as it gets me by for a while I'll be happy!! Thanks
