SteveP Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 My new A/C 712 (K301) has my confused. [V] I have studied the wiring diagrams which just doesn't match the tractor. Question: How many wires should be on the positve terminal of the coil. Mine has 2 and the wiring diagram shows only one. I was told that there should be two, one for starting one for run? The PO wired in a toggle switch between the key switch to the coil, why I can't figure out. With a key switch why would you need a kill switch? Thanks
HubbardRA Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Steve, Normally on a K301 there should be a wire from the ignition switch that brings power to the positive side of the coil. That is it. The negative side should have the wire from the points and the wire from the condenser, which mounts with the coil and has the case attached to ground. The Kohler coil is internally ballasted. There is no way to bypass the ballast when starting, so a second wire is not necessary. If the previous owner, for some reason, had installed the wrong ignition switch (one from an engine with a magneto), then the extra switch may have been put there for the purpose of supplying power to the coil when starting. On the magneto type ignition switches, the only terminal that has power in the on position is the ACC terminal, but power is cut off this terminal when the switch is put into the start position. The toggle switch could be there to supply power to the coil when the switch is turned to start, hence the extra wire at the coil. Without looking at the tractor and tracing the wiring, I can't really tell you much more with the information that I have.
StanD Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 My guess would be the wrong ignition switch was installed, one for a mag type ignition. These did not provide power in the start position so the toggle switch was added to provide power for starting. In the run position they do have power for lights, clutches, or other. This was their way around buying another new switch.
