firefoxz1 Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 I am trying to get a S/G working from a Broadmoor 728. According to the ohm measurements I found here and on the SimpleTrACtors site (Thanks Al) this should work but seem to be unable to get this to charge. 8.6 ohms from A to F, infinity on the accumulater, but with everything apart and disconnected I get a reading from either terminal to case of 9.6 ohms and am unsure if this is correct. Also can you bench test a s/g without a battery or regulator connected by spinning it from an outside source? I have replaced the brushes (Thanks Bob) and the CE bushing and cleaned it out as good as one can without tearing out the field coils. The Broadmoor I took this off of must have been in muddy water at one time as the s/g and regulator were full of mud. Someone cleaned it up on the outside and changed the oil but not these parts. I got the engine running great so atleast I can justify the $21 I spent for it.
Roy Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 Thom, If you put 12 volts on the battery/armature terminal it should make like a motor (e.g. starter). If you spin it by hand it should put out a faint/low voltage if the generator portion is working. Do this second so the field coils will have some residual magnetism for the generator. Works for me.
firefoxz1 Posted June 25, 2006 Author Posted June 25, 2006 OK. Being this is an extra S/G, and I am on a knowledge quest, I decided to remove the field coils and from examination of the coils they are not suppose to make contact with the shoes or case so this was probably my problem. (note: I drill little 1/8" pilot holes through the case and into the shoe so I can properly line them up again upon reinstallation. I am going to try to reisolate the coils and reinstall and find out what happens. Does anyone know of a good epoxy that is nonconductive? Maybe there is enough room to rewrap with electrical tape. This also gives me a chance to really clean out the case good, maybe even put it in the eltrolysis tank. Will update this again when done with results and final cost. So far 6.00 for brushes and a bushing.
