D-17_Dave Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 Finding a cheap powermax to use isn't to hard. However tractor pulling with a hydrostatic tractor isn't easy and is against most clubs rules for pulling I think. I'm sure if you look you can find something in your price range. Just be aware that talking about this as an idea is OK here. But to ask for this needs to be in the classifieds.
PeppyDan Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 In my area, hydrostat's are allowed in the tractor pulls, but a gear drive tractor does not loss nearly as much power through the drivetrain, so therefor most people don't use hydrostat's. The club I pulled with was pretty much in agreement that a 16hp tractor pulled about the same as a 12-14hp gear drive tractor. A large part of successful pulling is to keeping good ground speed and keeping the momentum of the tractor and sled. If you run too fast of gear, you can get the sled moving but will lack the power to kept it going as the transfer advances onto the plate. Variable drive tractors can have a slight advantage if there variable speed does not "eat" power and does not slip the belt. From what I have seen, the A.C.'s/Simplicity's have a very efficient variable, unlike a John Deere. Also keep in mind with the 720's that manuy clubs restrict rear tire diameters and widths. Dan
