Ketchamized Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 JMAC, It can be major or minor. You may want to e-mail the seller and ask specific questions. For example: When EXACTLY does it make noise? While shifting? While driving? While braking? It can be of the following reasons: 1) Transmission leaked empty, and gears are grinding. In some cases, just filling it up with fluid will be ok. If it's seriously damaged, a rebuild would be necessary. 2) Rust got to the pulleys and the moving parts and is squeaking. This can be the brake touching the brake pulley, it can be the pulley wheel rubbing against the transmission shaft. It can be belt rubbing. It can be a matter of simple adjustment, or a part replacement. Can be the rear wheel shaft squeaking. 3) Ask him what kind of noise is it? Is it a grinding noise? Squeaking? Squealing? Whining? 3) You may want to ask HOW LONG has it been making noise before it was put aside? It's a running tractor, and with all things, if things get too hairy, you can always drop the transmission and get a whole new one. Sometimes you can get one for as little as $100, for free, or up to $200 if you're lucky. The question would be this: If need be, would you be willing to buy a matching parts tractor if necessary? At 14 hours, and at just a little over $100, I'd personally (THIS IS A PERSONAL OPINION) say it's a good buy- as long as it's not over $250/$300 Best regards
