replacement motor for a 718?

I'm having head problems with the K361 in our 718H and the motor has no numbers on it anywhere. The exhaust valve seat will not stay in the head anymore. Will a K321/K341 motor from say a Cub or a JD fit in a 718H? Any idea how much work this may involve? Thx.

Deere and Cadets generally use an "A" block Kohler and the A blocks wont work in the Simplicity tractors without making adaptions. Some of the A Blocks used either the bottom bolt on Pan or the flange style, those have the flanges on the block and you can see them, but those seem to be a rarity. You should look for Kohlers with the pan like you have on your 361. Kohlers in Wheel Horse C-160 tractors would work.

Is it just the C-160 or are the the other C-series tractor made with the correct pan to fit? (IE C-120, etc..) Thx.

A good engine machine shop should be able to fix the valve seat in the head for you. A seat that has been properly punch pointed into the head of a K361 will not come out. I have heard of the seats being welded in also.

My brother-in-law had the same problem. The local small engine shops said the hole in the head was too large and it couldn't be fixed. He took the head to an automotive machine shop and they installed a screw-in valve seat, then staked it in place. No problems after that.

Hello, If youre ever looking to replace it, I have rebuilt 14 and 16HP kohlers for a good price, Those 18's seem to be problematic, but i know pullers like the blocks and modify them to suit their needs. So you should be able to get money for your old engine if it gives you too much trouble.

The C series ending with a ZERO all have the same usable pan. When you get into the C-161 types, the series that ends in a ONE then they switch to the "A" block type pan and continued that way through the C-165 series which all end in a FIVE. After those they came out in the mid to late 80's with the 300 and 400 series which all used Magnum series single cylinder engines. Those would work in your tractor as well, as they have the same pan as yours. The Magnums however use a magneto ignition rather than a battery ignition so you would have to change some wiring around and change key switches for those. You would have to check the flywheels on the magnums to make sure they have the 4 bolt holes to mount your driveshaft adaptor, but I think they do. You have a lot of repower options with the tractor you have. You could even rewire the tractor some and install a 16 hp Briggs like they used in the 3416 through 7116.
