Has anyone replaced the deck bearings on a 48 inch dec off a 73 Sovereign?

I have done it a few times. It helps to have a press available. Sometimes the pulleys are seized onto the shaft. Once you have the pulleys off the shaft should press out rather easy. Then just use steel bar and tap the bearings out. One comes out from the bottom of the arbor and the other comes out from the top. Just watch how the washers and spacers come out so they car be replaced in the same position.

I let a friend who had a press take mine apart. Unfortunately he got the washers and spacers in the wrong locations and the belt wouldn't line up. I had to take them back apart and move things around to get the pulleys to line up again. So do as Lon said and keep everything laid out the same, and put the spindles back in the same spot on the deck. This way everything should line up right.

You may need a puller for the top pulley. Most of the time they tap off with a hammer. I use the arbor bolts and vise to knock off the bearings unless they are frozen. After the pulleys are off I rest the bottom of the top bearing on the open jaws of vise screw the bolt into the arbor about 7 turns and hit the bolt with a hammer. The bearings usually knock off with a few hits. It is not a really tight fit like an auto axle bearing. I repeat the process on the other end Two weeks ago I did all 6 bearings in under a half hour. I did use an air impact gun to remove all the nuts and bolts.
