bigdog46 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I have a Kohler M18S Magnum 18 hp engine that I purchased used as a basket case. The owner told me that it came out of a Cub Cadet tractor and that the governor was bad. I refurbished the motor with a new nylon replacement governor, new rings, etc. Upon running the engine approx. 1 hour, the governor stripped the teeth. I tore the engine down again and replaced the governor with a new nylon replacement and put it back together. This time I only ran it approx. 45 minutes and the governor let go again. Has anyone else had a similar problem with the magnum engine? Thanks for you advice in advance. Gary. I found the problem today - the retaining ring that holds the governor shaft in the crankcase had failed and allowed the governor shaft to back out of the crankcase approx. 3/16". Thus the governor shaft was not protruding into the governor gear far enough and letting the gear cock sideways and strip the teeth off of it. Hope that this might help someone later on that may have the same problem. Gary.
