portuncia Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I have an issue with my starter generator, thought maybe someone could give me a quick 'what to look for' sometimes when I turn the key, I have an electric starter, no points, it clicks but won't turn the generator, I have to take a crescent wrench and physically twist the shaft on the generator until it moves freely. Is this an issue with the generator or is the compression of the motor too strong for the generator.
portuncia Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 Yes battery is fine I bought the tractor a month ago, I guess I should see if the amperage rating is adequate on it for the tractor.
goatfarmer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I would have the battery load tested,and check all the cables,for bad grounds,loose connections,dirty connections,etc.
JJ MARSHALL Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 remove the belt from generator to motor then see if the generator will spin with the battery then work from there. engine could be locking up. JJ
portuncia Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 how does the engine lock up? Is this a major problem?
Ketchamized Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Portunica, If your engine locked up, that's not good. You'll have to tear it down and rebuild it, if it's not too far gone. If your engine is a cast-iron engine, then chances are, it'll be easily rebuildable. Causes- overheating, bad/worn/broken rings, bad/scratched cylinder wall, no oil, bad/worn crankshaft arm... But, if your engine shut off normally the last time, then it's likely that it didn't lock up. Try removing the belt as JJ Marshall suggested. You should do two things: 1) See if the generator will spin with the belt off. 2) Use your hand and move the crankshaft by hand. Does it move freely? If not, then something's locked up somewhere. Another thing to check- as goatfarmer said- check all cables, contacts, etc... Also, make sure that the safety switch works if you've got one. Usually, it's under the seat and makes sure that your engine is shut off when you stand up if the tractor is in motion. Try closing that circuit by briding a temporary wire between the two terminals on the safety switch under the seat. Any changes? If your camshaft turns hard and requires pliers, then you might have a problem. To test this theory, take the spark plug out and turn it by hand. Did it become much easier to turn? If not, then something's wrong.
Ketchamized Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 P.S. with the belt off, turn the generator's shaft. Was it easy to turn?
