720 Starter Solenoid

Recommended Posts

The starter on the 720 works if I cross over the solenoid terminals with a pliers, but doesnt work with the switch. I have 12 volts on the wire. Are these solenoids supposed to click? What about an auxillary solenoid?

I used to put an second, auxiliary solenoid on 6-volt VWs and it works just fine. The problem with VWs is that the current had to run from underneath the back seat to the dash, then back to the engine behind the back seat. The battery was really only about 12-18 inches from the starter, but the "juice" for the solenoid went through close to 20 feet of wire... There was so much voltage drop that unless you had a hot, hot battery and new starter, it wouldn't work when it got down below zero in the winter. The fix was to put a 6-volt Ford tractor (8N vintage) solenoid on in, right between the starter and the battery... the first solenoid closed the second one... I'm not sure it will fix your specific problem, but it can easily be done. Use an off the shelf Ford one....
