B&S Head Bolts

Recommended Posts

Les
After taking the head off my 8HP Briggs. The head bolts keep snapping when I start to torque them down. I am tightening them in order. I was wondering if they get brittle after being used. I've only got 50lbs torque when they are breaking. Secondly I do believe the right torque is 165lbs. on this engine?? Please correct me if I am wrong. KS

The torque specification for your engine is 165 inch-pounds. Make sure your torque wrench is set to 'inch-pounds' not 'foot-lbs'. To convert foot-pounds into inch pounds, simply divide by 12. Also, you should apply either a graphite-based grease or anti-sieze compound to the bolt threads, as well as observing the correct tightening sequence. Regards, Tom K.
