I have known for a while where there was a kohler K482 18HP engine, but was waiting for some money to get it. It was at a dealer, so i thought they would want a fortune. It was ugly, seized, and exhaust flanges were broke off the block. However, it was all complete, even the aircleaner. 30amp stator and regulator, old sediment bowl and driveshaft adapter was there too. Went back today, as i had some money, figured $100 max, because i dont really need it but knew theres a good carb, flywheel, ect on it. Asked what he wanted he said $50:D:D. Got it home, pulled 1 head off, cylinder looked good, recently rebuilt. Now the other cylinder, the piston was cracked and dented in. Im guessing someone used too much ether in the winter, and blew the piston to peices. Continued to try to start it, scored the cylinder beyond repair. Anyhow, i guess its good i kept the good k482 block. Hopefully i can get ths and my K532 going. :D Too bad I couldn't get pictures of the neighbours 326437 that threw the rod, and cracked the piston into several peices last week. It's also Too bad briggs didnt make a comparable engine to this, too much cast iron i guess.:o) The rod is still in one peice, I thought they always threw rods?:DAnyhow, the crank journals are perfect with the exception of 1 main journal that is at the wear limit. Cam is good, valves are stuck in the block, thats why it seemed seized. I like coming across engines where the owners neglect them:D usually come cheap like this one. It had about a half inch of sludge and junk in the pan. After i get my K532 reassembled, ill work on this one. I already have new 0.020" pistons and rings for the spare block, just need to have it bored. I also noticed, this engine was unlike the others i have, instead of a ball bearing on the PTO end, it has a sleeve bearing with pressurized oil like the flywheel end, which do you think would be better? im just going to be running a mower deck off the pto. Kent, ill send you a rebuilt 16HP briggs if you send me your 25HP toilet. :DHopefully i get my rods for the k532 soon, and can get started on reassembly.

a rebuilt 16 hp Briggs is of equal value to a new 25hp Kohler ? Probably makes about the same horsepower and torque.

I emailed kohler asking for their torque curve charts for a k341, k532, and CH22. I got the torque curve, feul consumption and HP at given rpm's for the k241-k341, k532 and CH18-CH22. I asked briggs and stratton the same question about their engines, and was told to refer to the chart for a replacement engine, well thats real useful, I was quite disgusted that they would rather sell a new enigne than help me out with my question. Kohler did not even bring up anything about a new engine, i guess they werent expecting i'd need one. :) I'll only have a couple hundred in these engines, so im not too bothered what they do. I can get back what i spent even if they do blow up. I also have a picture of the rod from the cylinder with the blown up piston. You can see where it was rubbing on the bottom of the cylinder. I won't worry about the debates between the Briggs/Kohlers as I consider these style engines a different class. I would also be comfortable in saying that these cast iron twins from Kohler were the top of the line for them and extremely tough. I have a couple myself and only wish I had more use for them. True they aren't the best for fuel consumtion compared to the new overhead valve designs but they were for the most part bullit proof for their simplicity od design and time frame. If they used rod inserts I would prefer them to the Onan's.

I agree Dave, I am looking into getting bearings for the rods, but I did notice, the obsolete (kohler calls them) K662 engines had tapered main roller bearings, and rod bearings 0.002 0.010 and 0.020 under, sounds like a good engine, too bad you cant get parts. I'd like to pick one up some time, if theyre around.
