KDurkee Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 The wife and I drove nearly to Saginaw last night to pick up the 5216H I picked up on Ebay for $255. Before we went to pick it up and after reading about what some of these are selling for, I was really afraid that I may be buying a tractor that wasn't as good as claimed. My fears were put to rest last night as we pulled in and I saw her. She was clean and good looking. I felt better. The battery was dead, but with a jump she was running very smoothly and without any smoke. It wouldn't run without the choke on, but I was already made aware of that - no surprise. The transmission felt smooth and the steering tight. I paid the man and loaded her in the trailer and headed for home a happy guy. After a short examination of the carb this AM, I found that there was a bad diaphragm. Is there anyone on here that sells carb kits and other wear parts? I feel it only makes sense to support other members when possible. Thanks! Keith
shanhamm Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 try sandy lake implements. i personally havn't used them myself. but a lot of the members here swear by them. and also your supporting the club when you buy from them. http://www.simpletractors.com/JBSX/files/redirect.asp?b=5

firefoxz1 Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 First off the diaphram you speak of would have to be part of the fuel pump section and if it ran at all it "was" good. The most likely problem would be dirt in the main jet which can be cleaned most of the time without even tearing the carb off and apart, just remove the plug, or soleniod, off the side of the carb and look in to the jet. A little carb cleaner squirted in there and through the jet is usually all it needs. This year I've worked on a few of these carbs and all have been the quick 5 min clean job to get them running without the choke on.

The only way that it would even start was to hold my hand over the intake and the only way it would continue to run was to keep working the choke. It had to be nearly fully closed in order to keep the engine runnning. The first thing I did was to check the jet for dirt. Since there wasn't any, I pulled the carb off and dis-assembled. A diaphragm had a very small hole in it near the center. A carb kit will be the answer.
firefoxz1 Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Sounds like you did all the quick tips. What I should have said before was the pump was working if you got it to run at all which may have lead to a problem but IMHO was/is not your problem. You must have a blocked passage in the carb so a good cleaning and a kit is in order. I use a single strand of a wire brush to get into the very small passages.

I appreciate it. The carb is apart and cleaned on the bench waiting for parts. It won't be long now.
mowerman1193 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 You probably already did/know this but be sure to change the oil in it...I have seen them with a small hole in the diapham that allowed the fuel to leak into the oil...

I have not seen that happen, but since I just got her, I'll be changing the oil anyway. Thanks!
