Nubian Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I want to change the oil in my D/A 5215HST (18hp 3cyl Toyosha diesel) I want to flush it so to speak by changing the oil at least once if not twice before putting the best quality diesel motor oil I can find. The manual calls for 30wt above 32F,20-20wt 0 to 32F,10wt 0 and below and specifically states not to use multi-viscosity oils, any suggestions? I also plan to do the same with the hydraulic oil. Does anyone know if PowerFluid 821 is the same as Permatran III?
B.Ikard Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Interesting that multi grade oil is not recommended-in a liquid cooled diesel. The only other diesel I can think of with that spec are the 2 stroke Detroits, and they will have problems with 15-40 oil. I use 15-40 in all the diesels at work, from 3 cyl Kubotas, 7.3 powerstrokes, to 1400hp V12 Cummins with no problems after many hours. Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo 400, and Mobil Delvac are all top quality diesel engine oils, and superior gas engine oils too.... in fact I use Shell Rotella in all my tractors and personal vehicles. GWGAllisfan Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 From the chemistry side, I was always led to understand the Viscosity index improvers (What make a multi-grade do what it does) were prone to breaking down and the viscosity would go far too low at high temp, in addition to causing ash build-up problems. When I was formulating engine oil we always sold a 30wt and a 15w40. By the way the diesel engine oils are chemically superior in antiwear to regular gasoline engine oils, since the phosphorus contetn was lowered in PCMO a few year ago for emissions sake. There has been some discusion in the industry and particularly among the hot rod set that this has led to great cam wear in hi performance autos. Kind of off track...forgive me:)
Nubian Posted July 31, 2006 Author Posted July 31, 2006 could it be that being an '89 model, oils were not as advanced as today. I know that to be the case with 2 stroke engines. My dealer first recommended 15-40 until I quoted the manual, then he said never to go against the manual.quote:Originally posted by B.Ikard Interesting that multi grade oil is not recommended-in a liquid cooled diesel. BLT Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Our S-60 engine was designed around 15W40 oil with outstanding results. That doesn't mean everybody should get 15W40. Eddie, when your engine was designed and built, SAE 30 oil was the lubricant of choice for warm weather along with oils for different ambient changes. There might have been a MIL-2104 spec number also. What they seem to say is, "we tested our engines using straight wheight oils ahd that is all you need". Also keep in mind that your engine is out of the warranty horizon and then they don't really care, use what you want. But they did recommend what road to follow.
