dorise Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Hi guys. I have went thru the Gallery and saw both black and yellow air cleaner covers on the Big Ten. I have a 1965 Big Ten and the cover has been repainted. I am sure it was yellow but can some one tell me the correct color. My early B 10 has a black one. Also did they paint the carb and points cover also?
tanman722001 Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 I have seen them both ways.Yes the carb and points cover gets painted too.
gregc Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Here's a pic of my Big Ten. (original paint) No paint on carb or points cover.
Ketchamized Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 My B-210 looks just like Gregc's tractor above... Except the engine is black in color (original). My frame is very similar, a teeny little bit brighter. Regarding the engine color, I do wonder why there are variations in the paint color. Some people have a yellow engine, some has black, some brown. Same tractor... Hm. My B-210 has the original 10 hp cast iron engine on it.
ehertzfeld Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Yellow colored "Allis" and orange "Simp to a certain year" engines are original to the tractor, any other color indicates a newer engine. At least as I was told. Elon
Kent Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 As far as I can tell, the Big Ten was the last of the yellow engine and yellow drivetrain. The B-12s and "Bumblee B-10s" had black engines and drivetrains. The points cover nor carb shouldn't be painted on any of them, i.e. natural colored "aluminum/pot metal"...
tanman722001 Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 The reason I said paint the carb and points cover is that is what it shows. This pic is off here under Big Ten.But again they may have desided not to paint them.Just a thought. I think that's the case. That same brochure seems to show some tractors with yellow dash and side panels -- i.e. solid yellow -- yet I've never seen one that was originally painted that way...
gregc Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I think that maybe all the advertising pics for the Big Ten were probably made before the Big Ten was actually ready for the market. In all the pics where I'm able to see the carb it looks like they're all the three screw type attaching the upper body to the lower body of the carb and they all have the curved air pipe to the air cleaner. As far as I know these type carbs never came on the 243000 series engines. Those engines in the ad pics are probably 23D engines. I would guess that the 243431 engines weren't ready when the ad pics were taken, but I could be wrong.
dorise Posted August 2, 2006 Author Posted August 2, 2006 As usual you guys came thru again. Thanks for all the info. This is the month that I am serious about getting stuff done. I have a bit of blasting to do but want to paint as I go. Sure hope I can handle that job. I have all the equipment but need the expertise now. I have the tractor all in parts. Did you guys that done total restoration buy new bolts too and paint them after things were assembled? Once again thanks and thanks to all responsible for a great site for all interested in these things.
