728 second shift lever?

Hey Guys, I am currently restoring a Broodmore 728 so I am interested in these tractors. I saw this picture on Ebay and was wondering if anybody knew what the second shift lever on this 728 was for. Is it a High / low? Was it an attachment? What was the attachment part number? Just curious, but thought if anybody knew, somebody on this site would Thanks! That is the high/low lever. That is a pretty clean looking machine.

I thought it might be, but I have seen maybe 50 728 tractors over time, including owning one for 20 years and never saw one that had that second lever... Any idea if it was an attachment or just a rare version?

The 728 had 3 forward speeds, and was not intended to use the hi-lo. The hi-li was for older broadmoors that had only 2 forward speeds. The hi-lo made them crawl slow enough so that a snowblower could be used. They had a slot in the fender where the hi-lo lever stuck through. The 3 speed broadmoors did not have this slot in the fender. In the picture above, the hi-lo shift lever has been bent so that it sticks out in a place that was not made for it. Tom

Tom is right. The MFG # for the two speed pulley for the older Broadmoor's is 990324.

Huh, that's odd. My Allis B-208's seat pan has the slot for the hi/low, and is a 3 speed. No hi/low either. I just assumed the seat pans all had the slot. I have 3, and I think they all do. I'll have to make it out to the barn to check.

The B-207 and B-208 were not geared as low as the 3 speed Broadmoors. They needed a two speed pulley option just to slow first gear down to about the same speed as the 3 speed Broadmoors were without one.

Unless I'm mistaken, the B-207s and B-208s used larger cast-iron Peerless transmissions, while the Simplicity machines of the same time period used a smaller cast-iron transmission made by Simplicity. This was during the period that Allis had to make their own machines (due to a Federal anti-trust suit) in their Lexington, SC plant... so, Allis either made (themselves) or "jobbed out" some of the parts...

I know the transmissions I have (one B-208 and one B-207) are larger than the one I've seen on ZippoVarga's Broadmoor. Thanks for the info Kent. GregC, I didn't realize that they were geared different. Thanks for letting me know. Sean (ZippoVarga) told me his Broadmoor is almost too slow to mow with, and it's a 2 speed. So that makes a lot of sense. My 208 seems like it does fine speedwise, but the only thing i have to compare it to is my former mower, a rear-engine Snapper.
