Starter bendix question

Recommended Posts

I have an intermittent problem with my Kohler starter. Starter spins fine but when gear reaches end of spiral on starter shaft, and engages flywheel, the starter shaft spins inside the gear. Is the bendix worn. Never had this problem before.

Hi, The gear in the Kohler starters has a rubber insert in it that connects it to the helix in the inside of the gear and the housing behind it. The helix and rubber are inserted when the drive is made and the assy crimped together. You can check this by clamping the gear in a vise and turning the armature. You should be able to turn the armature, but it should be rather hard. If it turns very easy, a new drive is in order. This "slip clutch" is to prevent breaking the armature shaft when the starter kicks in and to also provide some backfire protection. Al Eden
