update on wards mystery machine

Recommended Posts

I have discovered a maze of manufacturers for montgomery wards tractors. First it is not a simplicity it was built by yardman.Apparently while gilson was building the larger L&G tractors yardman was building the smaller lawn mowers.Have found a type of legend to discover original builder by the first 3 letters of model#.simplicity(SIM)gilson(GIL)yardman(ZHJ or ZYJ)MTD(TMO). Sometime during the yardman production they were bought by MTD thus the 2 yardman letter codes. Still have not been able to date machine exactly yet but will continue to search. I know that this has little to do with the main purpose of this site but it turned out to be an interesting thread to chase.I have decided that my M/W is worthy of restoration and adding it to my collection. Thanks for the comments from my 9-22 posting.

I'm not surew this will help you with determining the year, but here is what I have on Tecumseh engines. It appears you have a Vertical Heavy Frame Cast Iron 10 HP. There should be another number which is the date code, or as in the illustration DOM.
