Sunstar Differential Lock

I was using my Sunstar with the front blade today and needed to use the differentail lock most of the time. This is kinda a pain to use with the lever being spring loaded. It got me thinking, would it be a good idea to modify this to a servo or something that could be engaged by a switch. I would use a switch similar to a mowing deck switch so that it would disengage when the tractor gets shut off and would need to be reengaged each time it was needed. Has anyone done this or have ideas for it. Dan

Great idea -- I would like to do the same my Legacy. Would something as simple as a plate on a pivot to lock the spring loaded diff. pedal down work? David

The spring loaded pedal is there for a reason. It will do tremendous damage to the rear end if you try keeping it engaged any longer than when it's spinning. I would be in favor of makeing it easier to get to but would leave it spring loaded. Also, the diff lock is made for temp. use only. If it is constantly spinning you need more weight on the rear for more traction.IMO.

I would not recommend doing anything of this sort! You will do no harm to the differential if you drive in a straight line all day long. But you WILL tear stuff up in there if you start turning (or trying to turn) with the lock on.

I have thought about putting a little larger pedal on mine to make it easier to get to. But I wouldn't want to leave it on for any length of time.

You can also play with the indivdual brakes to transfer wheel spin from one axle to another like you do on a farm tractor.

The work I was doing was pretty much straight pushing and as I backed up I would move over about one tractor width. I was pushing freshly tilled soil so I could get a blade full to push but my tires were also in loss soil so this caused the need for extra traction. I did not have any weight on the tractor so I didn't pack the soil were I was driving. As I stated in my first post, the switch would need to be something that would definatly shut off if the engine were shut off and I thought also the driver got off the seat. There would also need to be a big red light to remind the driver that it was on. I do not plan to do this modification as this was on a short list of times when I needed it on for any lentgh of time in the 9 1/2 years that I have owned this tractor. Dan

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
