728, 14 hp?

I'm going to look at a tractor which has been identified by the owner as a 70's 728. He stated it has a briggs 14hp. I've been doing some research, and it doesn't appear Simplicity made a 728 with a 14 hp. Any ideas other than a new engine? He appears lucid, so far. Thanks. Deidra

Its been re-powered,the 728 was an 8hp. but don't let that stop you,i have a 6hp. broadmoor and when it comes time for a new engine,i'll have to go up in horse power too. I've been told that if i want the same "power " and torque that i'm looking at atleast 12hp.

I just got another email and he said he took a wild guess on the model. No markings on the hood, just been a good working tractor for him. Hmmmmmmmm.......

I have a 728 with a 12 HP in it and you can't do it without major sheetmetal modfications. The 12 HP is just too big. JW

A few years ago I picked up a 728 with a Briggs opposed twin 16HP engine ON it, not in it.lol. They had to remove the hood and grill, wasn't enough room for any of that nonsense. Plus they had to cut into the dash area in front of the gas tank and move the tank back as close to the steering wheel as possible. They also had a tiller on the back.

I put a 8.5 HP in one of my 738's. Had to notch the hood, center tower, and rig up the grill. I used the 8.5 becuase I had it and it was brand new. I have a 42" grader Blade on it. Works great and fun project. I'll post a picture maybe later. UPDATE:

Wow, Thanks guys! I picked up the mystery tractor today. Turns out to be a 728, all original. The guy I got it from was so impressed with what it could do, he said it had to be at least 11hp. Nope, just the original 8hp. I am now playing the one implement per machine game for winter. 725 dozer, 728 blower. Deidra

I have a 515 Serf that had a bad five horsepower Briggs, so I installed a 12.5HP I/C engine in it instead. I am never at a loss for power that's for sure. Even though I look really silly I'm told driving it around the yard. Todd

Wow! That Serf must pull wheelies! I have a Yeoman that has a transplant 8hp and I have to be careful with it when I don't have the deck mounted. Tom

The engine in my Serf is pretty heavy, so I don't have any wheelie problems. I can pretty much let it idle when I cut the grass. Todd
