Bed too Narrow

Recommended Posts

When I bought my Legacy I used my dad's 94 F150 to haul it home from PA. I couple of weeks ago I tried to put it in my new truck, a '97 F150, but I found the tailgate was opening was too narrow for the 60" mower deck. It turns out the 96 and older F150 tailgate opening is about 6" wider than the 97. Does anybody have 96 or older F150 for sale or better yet a GMC?

Wouldn't a small trailer be cheaper & easier to load & unload?

That would be good but my wife hates the idea of a trailer sitting in the yard.

Step #1 Convince her that you need a trailer. step #2 Leave a few larger things in the yard. (mower deck and maybe a tiller) step #3 Explain that if you had a barn you could put all of your stuff in the barn. :D

Trailer is definitely good to have. Explain to her how you can pickup that new (insert what she wants here) that wouldn't fit in the truck.

Matt, I like the Ford and got a real good deal on it -- but I expected it would haul my tractor (with the deck). Like so many other things I just have to adjust my expectations and probably borrow my dad's truck once and awhile. btw: got the wheel in the mail on Saturday -- thank you. David

David, I had a similar problem with my B-210. The deck wouldn't fit on the back of my S-10. So, what I did- I pushed the tractor in as far as I could, and used ratchet straps to hold it in. Worked great despite the fact that the tractor's rear tires were halfway off the bed. (Used plywood to "extend" the floor of the bed). Good temporary measure. If that doesn't work, you could always build a wooden platform that fits on the bed, completely level on the rails and tailgate, and is completely flat (and bigger) with ratchet hooks on the sides. Use a long ramp to get the tractor on it. Leave the wood platform on the truck for a while... Drive around with that as it is. Say that it doesn't take up any room in the yard. Best,
