Limited slip assembly

Recommended Posts

I removed the limited slip assembly from an extra rear end I have and all the spider gears are gone but 1 and some gears are welded. I'm guessing some tried making it straight posi. My question is, if the parts are avalaible is it cost effective to rebuild it or not? Basicly all I have is the housing and keys. If not is it hard to remove a working one and replace it as a unit or does it have to be disassembled? Thanks.

I've seen people fly threw disassembling/reassembling these. I have two machines busted and these parts are in boxes. If the axle was the only problem with those machines, they'd be running...I'd get it done. I think it's a pain, don't break your machine!

I forgot to mention this is off a B-10. ( If it makes a difference.) Unfortunatly I didn't notice this until I had it all cleaned up ready for primer. Again, thanks for any input.

Brian, There are two types. Old style with the two adjustment screws on the hub, and the new type with the spring loaded spyder gears. Good thing is that these two can be interchanged if the diff, right side hub and axle are all swapped together. Whether you need to disassemble the diff or not is dependent on how the large bolts that go thru the housing and attach to the tube are assembled. If the nuts are on the back side of the tube flange, then it can be pulled as a unit. If the nuts are on the side of the housing toward the wheel hub, then the diff must be disassembled to get it off the tube. I have seen them mounted both ways. These units are not difficult to work on, once you understand how they go together. I've had 4 or 5 of them apart for various reasons. I've never had a broken spider in any of mine.

Thanks guys, I did a little more research on it and doesn't look to bad. The bolts were in from both directions. It was definatly locked posi. They acually did a decent job at it. Another member sent me an email he has an extra one he's willing to part with. I think I'll go that direction to speed things up for now.

Those diffs are easy to lock. You don't even have to remove the housing and spiders to do that. I can do that in 10-15 minutes. Here is one of the later model limited slip units. Parts can all be assembled onto your unit. You will have to use your current right side hub, because the axle will be too short for this hub, unless you find a later model axle also. I am sure the buy-it-now cost is much less than the cost of new parts. http://simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=71239

Finally recieved a good used limited slip assembly,(Thanks Bill) I Just need a few small pieces to complete it. The local dealer said the differential gear 164219 is still avalaible for $70.00. Does this sound rite? It's not a very big gear. And in the parts catalog it says 154035 axle washer is quanity 1 But the picture makes it look like there could be a couple of them. Any ideas? Thanks again for your help.
