3-speed rearends....all the same?

Recommended Posts

are the 3-speed rear ends all the same, or do they differ? Reason i ask, is while wiring my 700 i noticed a LOT of welding repair on one side of the housing....enough to where i've been thinking about finding a replacement half. What say thee O wise ones?

As far as bolting up goes, I believe they are they same. However some have different diameter and lengths shafts, so you have to take that into consideration.

Thanx Elon, that's what i needed to know. I know they sort of looked the same, but wanted to make sure before i ran out and grabbed one online.....this one works great, but the thoughts of having some serious "booger welds" holding the case half together bothers me [:0]

As Elon said the input shafts may be different for the different systems (3-speed, variable, six-speed). The older transaxles had bushings for the tube axle and newer ones have needle bearings. Everything is interchangable.

so, if i stay with a early 3-speed rearend i should be ok, well besides the axle shafts? Basically, all i need to do is swap everything from my rearend casing into another, and/or find a decent useable half to replace my boogered up one. That sound doable? maybe?
