scrowba 0 Posted October 31, 2006 Hello, Yes I did purchase the 4040 and have been using it around the yard already. I do have 2 questions so far. 1) When I go to start, I get a click and the tractor does not start the first time. This might happen a couple of times before she starts. The battery is fully charged and the tractor does have a new starter. Might this be a wiring issue? 2) On the hood below the 4040 decal there are 2 holes on both side which appear to be a place where some type of emblem used to be. What emblem goes there? Thanks Karl
HubbardRA 19 Posted October 31, 2006 Karl, The clicking sounds like a corroded connection somewhere in the starting circuit. Moisture in the corrosion will prevent a good current flow. The more times it clicks, the more it makes contact and dries out the moisture. The arcing will also make more of a contact area for current flow. I would take all of the connections apart and clean them them reassemble. This is battery terminals, connections to solenoid, connection to starter, etc. Also check the area where the wire is joined to the terminal lugs, to make sure the wire is not broken or extremely corroded at that connection. UCD 14 Posted October 31, 2006 A solenoid is an electrically operated switch. A low amperage 12 volt circuit (the key switch) used to electrically activate a high amperage 12 volt circuit (the starter) The clicking you hear is the solenoid activating. The problem is the solenoid high side contacts are not completing the circuit putting power to the starter. There can be two things that cause this. (1) Corroded connections or bad wire on starter side of solenoid. Check this first. (2) Burnt high side contacts in solenoid. Solution replace the solenoid. wilm169 1 Posted October 31, 2006 There is a right up on here some where that states this is a problem on these tractors, and a way to fix it is to add anouther solenoid in line for less power needed. JP wrote it.
Ronald Hribar 126 Posted October 31, 2006 I believe AL Eden sells a kit for this problem also.
ikipp 0 Posted October 31, 2006 If you have a electric fuel pump. That may be the sound you hear. My 4041 clicks very rapidly when I turn on the key; its the electric fuel pump. Enjoy your 4040; they are great fun.
