Lift-rod snowblower mod

Recommended Posts

Simpleton7016
I hooked the 42 inch snowblower from my 7016 (Front PTO) on my 912 (Center PTO) and everything works great except that the lift rod was just a couple inches short due to the extra length on the front end of the 7100 series. So I went and picked up a different lift rod and now it appears too long!! It has a bend in it....maybe someone can help identify it. I moved the spring up adound the bend (I sound like Credence Clearwater now) and tightened everything down. It seems to work. My question is two-fold: Will this rod function properly like this over the long term? This is the machine that Bob and I converted to Hydro lift and everything seems to function right. Can I simply cut off the leftover rod on the long end? Thanks in advance and here are the pictures.

Erik ... yes it does appear to be a bit longer:D While I do not have an answer to you identification question, there have been a couple of posts on here lately conecerning lift rod lengths. There is an article in the Do-It-Yourself section of SimpletrACtors that descibes making an adjustable lift rod for those facing a length problem or even a missing lift rod. http://www.simpletractors.com/do_it/adjustable_lift_rod.htm After looking at your pictures again, if it were me and you wanted to use the new rod, I would look at the possibility of moving the spring back down around the curve so it works as designed with a direct force on the spring and not around the curve. I would look at cutting it off and bending a new hook on the end that connects to the lift on the tractor.

Erik....that long rod looks like the same lift rod on my Simplicity 6218 tractor with 42" snowblower.

I would straighten out the bend on the front end, then cut the rod to length, leaving a few inches for adjustment. I have never owned a factory rod, so I have made all of mine. There is nothing critical about the rod, so long as it lifts the implement properly. The spring is only there to let it follow the contours of the ground. I made a sliding rod like that for my snowblower, but do not use a spring. The weight of the blower holds it down, and a spring is not needed.

Karl's pic tells the story on the lift rod. It's for the 4000, 5000 and 6000 series. For snowblower and dozer blade/snow plow.

If you have or know someone with a torch,, I would use that instead of a hammer. Your going to want the rod to be nice and smooth for the lock ring.

Eric Turn the end around on your short rod and it will be long enough. Slide the top collar down to put some tension on the spring to put down pressure on blower in down position. The right part used the right way will work. You have the correct lift rod unless someone has shortened it

Erik, I would personally leave the long rod as is, and cut off excess. Either that, or offer it to trade with someone else here that has the right lift rod. Just my opinion... I'd be concerned about the rod bending after it has been altered from its original form.

The rod length should be 35.5 inches long for a 900 series snowblower. I would agree with UCD,looks like you could turn the rod guide ass. around to make it work.Unless it would still be to short when plowing over a hump.

If I had an extra rod for the 900 series I would trade you. I was/am looking to find or make another rod for my 6216 for the blower. For my 7112H (A/C 912H) I've got a 35.5" rod for my dozer blade and a 34" rod for the blower, do I have these backwards/switched? I haven't mounted these yet since I got them this spring so I may have.

Maynard, you and Ken were dead on as usual. Here's the kicker: I actually tried that before I even posted this, but it just couldn't quite reach by maybe 3/4 of an inch or so. So I picked up this other one with the bend in it. As it turns out, I did not have the hydro all the way forward - one of the downsides of hydrolift is that you have to have the machine running to move the lifts up and down. Once I had the hydro all the way forward, I had plenty of room. Once again, I am humbled by the simple!! So Thomas, if you need the other lift rod still, send me a PM. Thanks, Erik
