MisterB 0 Posted November 4, 2006 I've looked through the manual several times and cannot seem to find any mention of what type gear oil goes into the BGB. They do list the Simplicity part number above, but not what type, weight, etc. Anyone know what a 'generic' equivalent is? How much oil does the BGB hold? Anyone ever use synthetic lubricants in this or the transmission? Tractor is 1978 7014S - 1690337 Thanks in advance! Ken
RayS 80 Posted November 4, 2006 I use 80-90W. You can also use simplicity multipurpose powertrain oil.
MPH 12 Posted November 4, 2006 I use synthetic gear lube in all my B series tractors. Think it's 80-90w

MisterB 0 Posted November 5, 2006 So, the $64k question is: what exactly is Simplicity multi-purpose oil? I'm considering the change to synthetics and it would seem important to know what type of oil this is so I can find a suitable synthetic replacement. The transmission seems to be 90W gear lube. It's the BGB that I'm confused about...
UCD 14 Posted November 5, 2006 It is simplicity's version of multipurpose transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, gear lube. The earlier BGB's used 90w the later ones use multi purpose oil IE. ATF. ATF is just a high grade hydraulic fluid. Most of today's manual transmissions in cars and light trucks use ATF instead of 90w.
Ketchamized 2 Posted November 5, 2006 Maynard, So it's safe to use ATF in the BGB and transmission in the B series tractors regardless of the model? If it's a higher grade, then the transmission would like ATF better?
UCD 14 Posted November 5, 2006 That is not what I said. Where it says to use Simplicity multipurpose oil you can use ATF. The earlier BGB's used 90w the later ones used Multipurpose oil/ATF. The Transmission & Gearbox Lubrication Charts tell which ones. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22258
Ketchamized 2 Posted November 5, 2006 Maynard, Thanks, just wanted to double check before making a regrettable mistake. :) What would define "later" tractors? (Late 60's and on?)
MisterB 0 Posted November 5, 2006 According to the chart, for my tractor...later would be 1975 and after.
UCD 14 Posted November 5, 2006 The chart defines which ones by model number.
Mick14 0 Posted November 6, 2006 How often should the gear oil be changed in an older tractor that takes the 80-90 oil ?
UCD 14 Posted November 6, 2006 Some where around 100,000.00 miles. You will never wear it out. If it makes you feel better change it as often as you wish It is not expensive and doesn't take much or a lot of time to do.
