KenK 0 Posted November 6, 2006 I just picked up a 919 with hydro lift,48"deck and 36"tiller.The motor has been pulled out because of a knock.I have a 16hp briggs single that I can slip right in without too many mods.My question, have any of you had any problems overhauling the KT-19.I think that the crank needs ground and a couple rods installed.I'm just wondering if I put the time and money in this engine will it last a good many years.Or should I stick with old reliable 16. BLT 725 Posted November 6, 2006 I bought a 917 less engine because I had a spare 16 HP Briggs. Needed a driveshaft from 7116, bought the right (used) muffler and shield on E-bay. And for the wiring you can get the relay kit from Eden's that will let you run a grounded ignition with a live wire, use existing charge wire if you have it and that's about it. Holes for 16 HP should be punched in the frame.
RBE17 0 Posted November 7, 2006 I have a AC917H w/ a blown KT17. I'm not even bothering w/ the KT17. I'm gonna put a single cyl B&S in it. I would just stick w/ teh B&S if you have it already. BLT pointed out the things you need. That'll be much cheaper than overhauling the KT17.
maxtorman1234 0 Posted November 7, 2006 If its a series 2 i'd fix it, a twin is much better than any single. Our Kt 17 has never given us a problem since we bought it new. I think its worth fixing theyre not too hard to work on
Ronald Hribar 127 Posted November 7, 2006 Look what a replacement KT motor costs. Check ads for mowers with blown KT motors. You are reading handwriting on the wall. You can buy a bigger, more reliable Kohler motor cheaper than the KT. And not have to worry about it blowing again. Briggs, Kohler, Honda all make motors that will fit. KenK 0 Posted November 9, 2006 I got the 16hp briggs in tonight, boy that is a nice engine.I had to put a new ignition switch in that would work with briggs coil.Did a little wiring, put a longer throttle cable on and a longer fuel line. I found a longer drive shaft in my stash that will work. All I got left is a new battery and to try and get the charging system working. This engine has the ring gear starter with the charging behind the flywheel. Is there a regulator or something for this system? BLT 725 Posted November 9, 2006 Your charge wires depend on what color wires you have coming out. If you have a red and black wire coming out then you have a dual circuit, red being 3 Amp DC and black being headlight circuit. You can take headlight wire direct to switch after you disconnect power wire and it will be ok except for idle where lights will dim. The red wire can connect to to your charge wire. This is what I did to my 917. It barely makes the ameter move and I replaced my ameter with a voltmeter, as it tells me more. All of the above will keep your battery charged. The other option is two wires of the same color, I think yellow. Those are the A-C wires that need a regulator to function. They will be either 10 or 15 amps depending on the magnets you have in flywheel,
KenK 0 Posted November 10, 2006 Come to find out, there is a rectifier behind the fan shroud right above the starter gear.Mine is shorted out,got a new one coming.
