Lateral Axle movement

Recommended Posts

I brought the old 990314 landlord into the garage the other night, in anticipation of some dissasembly, cleaning and painting. Last night I was trying to get an idea of the condiotion and issues to think ahead on, when I noticed the axle tube seems to be able to move from side to side about 1/4 inch. I thought it might be a bad bushing?, so raising the rear off the ground and lifting each wheel, I confirmed there wasn't any up and down movement relative to the transmission. There is heavy oil/grease leakage in that area, but nothing else. Any idea how serious this could be? With my primitive repair area, I want to stay out of the transmission if I can. I will try to take pictures if i can get any to show anything clearly.

I think if you just loosen the coller on the left side, and push the differential side over to the left, you can take up the gap. It's been a while, but i think it is a common fix.
