sore-toe
I picked up this big ten about two months ago didnt run but looked like it could be a keeper for a 150.oo dollars carb promblems? well I rebuilt the carb got it to run but the motor is all over the place not hunting just wide open or just barely runnin try adjusting the governor but that doesnt seem to help at all my next thought was to pull the motor and have acloser look at the enternal going's on of this governor any sugestoins before I dig in would be appreciated. o'ya this is a 243431 series engine, no breather tube for the carb breather tube comes off the right side of the engine as your sitting on the tractor and goes behind some sheet metal.the newer models have a tube that goes from the valve inspection plate to the breather. ZippoVarga
Hi Dan The inspection plate you refered to is your crank case vent. On the older engines they just vented the blow by gasses out into the air. Later, when the EPA came along the design was changed to vent the blow by gas back into the carb to re-burn the waste. I would lean towards a gasket leak first. Either at the flange attaching the carb elbo to the block or where the carb bowl attaches to the elbo. A leaky gasket is a best case scenereo and my first choice to inspect before tearing the motor down. Another area to inspect is the fuel line. Cracks or clogs or restricted flow to the carb can cause this reaction. Next, make sure the tank is clean of debris. Nothing blocking the screen where the fuel line attaches. You can test the gaskets for leaks with a can of ether or starting fluid by spraying just a little bit at the gasket locations and seing if the engine surges while doing so. The fuel lines are cheap to replace. If you have not already done so then I would reccomend changing it. Check the flow of the tank with the fuel line off and the filler cap off. IF it flows well then put the fuel cap back on and see if the fuel stream slows down. If it does then replace the fuel cap with one that you know is vented. If after performing all these tasks you are still having a problem then I would dig deeper. Good luck Dan! Keep us posted! Sean aka Zippo
sore-toe
well thanks for the reply, I got my trusted never let me down service manual this morning and started reading it over, I didnt want to dig any deeper than I had to. And by the way all the suggestions you offered was good advice when I rebuilt the carb I changed all gaskets and hoses to include the fuel line. But I got the bug worked out and It actually runs rather well, the governor adjustment on this motor is a little different than the newer B.S. engines so with the proper adjustment she took right off. thanks again for the reply, now to change the B.G.B. should be a good time, doesnt look like it is that bad not as much as the 7100's I hope. chadwick404
hi - i have a '67 B-10 - the breather and filter assembly has been tinkered with a bit and i think the setup is a little off - i read your posts above but am still a bit confused - any way you could post some pics of the breather tube going into the air breather? from several angles would be great...or maybe you know a good assembly diagram pdf? I checked the parts manuals - i see the tube, but not how it goes - my breather has what appears to be a hand cut hole for the tube...?
