jdm 0 Posted January 2, 2007 I put Mobil One oil in my winter tractors two seasons ago and like the way they crank and start when cold. I have had no problems. Is there any reason I should'nt use this oil for any other applications, like my logsplitter, or generator, other than cost? How about leaving it in for summer use? I know it's good stuff but is it okay for the older engines?
dirtsaver 1 Posted January 2, 2007 Jim I can answer at least part of your questions as I've been running Castrol Syntec for a while now. I have the Syntec in my 1992 17GTH-L and my 1967/8 3012V and run it year round with no problem other than the synthetic oil finds every weak gasket on the engine and I have a lot more oil leaks than before I switched. Marty(MPH) up in Alaska runs nothing but Mobil One in his old 725 year round and I think he would agree it likely adds to the life of the old engines. As for the other equipment, I've thought about switching my generator over just because it does see service during the winter where regular oil may hamper starting. I don't know if the benefits of synthetic oil would outweigh the expense in the other equipment.
RayS 80 Posted January 2, 2007 I use 10w30 synthetic in mine year round. with no problems.
rsnik 1 Posted January 3, 2007 I don't know if this is fact or an old wives tale but I heard that switching back and forth from synthetic to petroleum oils is disfavored because it causes hardening of seals and even worse oil leaks. The wierdest thing I use syn oil for is my chainsaw if the weather is cold. I have a pile of big oak logs way out back and have been known to run out of split wood just when it gets real cold. I take the Trailblazer, set a choker and skid a log up here. Sawing up a big log when it's cold seems to dull the chain quickly. I think it doesn't get any oil on the chain as the oil is too thick from cold. I put syn oil in the chainsaw and the oil lubes the chain too much (wastefully) but I swear it makes the saw cut through 24" coal hard oak like butter and the chain stays sharp longer. UCD 14 Posted January 3, 2007 Old wives tales - Urban legend
HubbardRA 19 Posted January 3, 2007 The Urban Legend stems from the fact that when synthetic oils first came out, they were lower viscosity than the standard 30 and 40 weight oils that were being used. They were more like 10 and 20 weight oils. This made them leak thru seals that would otherwise hold the 30 weight oils. This is not true nowadays, since the synthetic oils have been further developed to directly match the naturally refined oil specifications.
ikipp 0 Posted January 4, 2007 I've been using Mobil 1 for years. In cars, airplanes, motorclycles, lawn mowers etc. (I am going to try it as a chain saw blade oil.) I have had no problems. No engine problems and engines show little wear for the use they get. I would pay more and still be happy to get Mobil 1. Use it, I think you will like it. MPH 12 Posted January 5, 2007 I run syn oil in everything I use in the winter, gear lub included. When I get to it, gonna put syn in my hydro pump on the Landlord also as it get real slow out there at 20 b elow like it was last nite.
Leroy 0 Posted January 7, 2007 Marty the cold weather oil test you did a year ago or more is why I switched to Amsoil My son uses it also. Your pictures were very good. The engines will last longer and we likely get our moneys worth out of them.
quantico 2 Posted January 25, 2007 Mobil-1 is simply an excellent product. I use it in many many engines and believe it makes starting easier and makes the engine last longer. I even use 15 w 50 mobil-1 as my primary gun oil... it beats anything else I have ever tried..
