johnmonkey
hello all, I have a Simplicity 3410 with a 10 hp B&S model 243431. The carb is missing the ~ 2" cap at the end (where the choke butterfly is located). Can I cut a piece of steel and cap the end? or do I need to buy a replacement part? Thanks in advance. Roy
Yes. You can make one or buy one. Original is a domed Welsh plug. B & S dealer should have them. Auto parts store may have one the correct size. Do a site search (Welsh plug, carburetor plug, etc.). There have been several posts on the subject. BLT
Briggs 221747 is easier to work with as typical automotive plugs are too thick and hard to set.
ambler
John I usually set them in fingernail polish, since there's plenty of that around here.
HubbardRA
John, Whatever happened to cardboard and duck tape? }:):D I recently removed one of the plugs from one old carb and installed it in another that worked but was missing the plug. Yes, they can be taken out and re-used. ^

Guest
The cap on my Simplicity 3314 has a hole punched into it. Is that the way it's supposed to be?
ambler
No hole should be there. This needs to be covered because it bypasses your air cleaner.

Strange, the hole is about 1/16 in. in diameter and looks like it was punched from the inside. Any idea what would've caused this or why someone would find the need for it. Guest
I noticed after my earlier post that the cap is included with B&S's carb rebuild kit. Why would they include something like this? It doesn't seem to be a consumable or wearable item.
Orange
Steve, I don't believe most people ever use the cap that is included in the kit, however, if you want to remove the choke butterfly or shaft, you need to remove the cap to get at it. When you do this you often misshape or damage the cap and thus you have a new one to install.
