Charlieson
Went to get on my 3416 the other day and noticed that the tar was low. So I pulled it over to the shed and started putting air in the tire. Water started seeping out of the rim. Hole was rusted through rims. Today, I started to see if I could repair it. Hole is pretty big. Any one sucessfully repaired a rusted rim. I had an extra set, but sold them to a friend. ddh
HubbardRA
Dwayne, Which wheel is it, front or rear? I could probably help you with one if you need it badly. With your welder, you could patch up the hole in the wheel. I would then put a tube in that wheel. If the weld is not smooth enough for a tube, after grinding, I would just cover the weld with RTV. When I widen wheels I use RTV to cover the welds to prevent puncture of the tubes. Rod
UCD
Take them off clean up with wire brush and weld the hole closed. If useing tubes grind weld smooth and repaint.
Roy
Word of caution. Be sure the rim isn't rusted so bad that it is structurally weak. Rust damaged rims have been known to blow up. [:0]
Guest
The beginning post couldn't have been more the same to my situation just last week. Thanks for the question and answers.
UCD
At less than 10 lbs of pressure I don't think there is much chance of it blowing up. I do not run any pressure in my loaded tires and wheels.
Roy
Two pictures are a rusted rim that had a tube with calcium chloride in it. The chunk next to the valve stem hole came out while the tire was being demounted. Don't think it is usable regardless of the pressure. Others may have a different opinion. ;)
MPH
Nice pictures of another reason to bolt on iron for wts Roy. I'd be afraid of using them.
Guest
Wow! The inside of my rims look new compared to that. I only had a pin hole.

Charlieson
I havent had time to pull the wheels off. Thanks for the offer of rims. Its the back ones. I actually got a set of rims off of a cub that will bolt right up, but they are a bit narrower. However, I have a pretty nice set of lugs on them. The old cub 70 that currently sports them is in sore need of a clutch so I dont think they are doing her any good. She also has some steering gearbox issues. I got a feeling that the rust is pretty substantial, but will find out more this weekend when I get time to take the wheel off and pop the rubber off of the rim. thanks, ddh
