WITom 0 Posted January 27, 2007 I just wanted to convey my gratitude to all of you who helped me out with the problem of carb icing and rough running on my Sunstar. I just finished installing a homemade pre-heater - following Al Eden's instructions and the problem disappeared. This was a very simple project. Drilled a 1 1/2" hole in the air cleaner cover and the same size hole in the center of the muffler heat shield. I bought a 1 1/2" pc of kitchen drain pipe, epoxyed 1 pc of it into the air cleaner cover and braized the other pc into the heat shield. Hose clamped a short pc of aluminum pre-heater hose to each, plugged the holes from the blower housing, and away I went. Engine runs perfectly now with no adjustment needed to carb itself. I had an old air cleaner cover from the old engine - I modified that one for winter use. When warm weather hits, I'll simply swap the old modified cover for the new one that came with this motor and I'll be all set for summer. Cost: 1 1/2" kitchen drain pipe, 6" long - $4.79 1 1/2" heater hose - $5.50 2 hose clamps - $1.38 2 triangular plugs to plug blower housing (Kohler part #24 096 17-S) - $10.15 1 tube of epoxy - Had some around the house, but I doubt it is more than $2.00. Total - $23.82 Took all of about 1 hr altogether - although I let the epoxy "set" overnight. Only snag I ran into was one of the screws that holds the muffler heat shield on snapped off. I had to drill it out and re-tap the hole for a 5/16" bolt. Again, thanks all for your help!!
Roy 0 Posted January 27, 2007 Congratulations. I love it when a plan works. ^ Al knows his stuff as evidenced by the availability of stock plugs from Kohler.
D-17_Dave 12 Posted January 27, 2007 Isn't it only fitting that you fixed a Kohler with plumbing partsB):o):D

comet66 0 Posted January 28, 2007 I'll ignore the crude comments from the peanut gallery (anybody else remember this?), and say "Cool, the only thing you forgot are the pictures."

D-17_Dave 12 Posted January 28, 2007 What can I say, it was there and I just had to take it. I'm sure the results are what was desired and it wouldn't be the first or the last time any of us have had to resort to useing whatever we could find at the local hardware store to fashion some repair or modification. Congrats Tom on getting it dialed in. But it's still funny.}:):D:D
Boney 0 Posted January 28, 2007 Is there a picture of this handy work available?
WITom 0 Posted January 28, 2007 Yep, gotta agree that is kind of ironic! And something I hadn't thought about! I will get you guys a few pics if it ever warms up a bit. I hate taking digital pics outside when it's cold - I ruined a camera once doing that. Bringing a cold camera in where it was warm caused condensation somewhere and the thing never took decent pics again. Stay tuned and be patient!
WITom 0 Posted January 29, 2007 Here's a pic of the finished product. As far as assembly, the pics Al posted above pretty much sums it up how it goes together.

WITom 0 Posted January 31, 2007 Yes, it is an electric fan. I added that last spring after installing the new engine. I've read a lot of stuff where these 20 hp engines are only lasting about 800 hrs (old one lasted 750 - was shot when I bought this tractor) when the engine otherwise last 1500 - 2000 hrs in other applications. I put the fan in the grill to help pull heat from the engine compartment - and it works well.
