Wheel Spacer Design

Recommended Posts

Guest
In search of some wheel spacers I came across three approaches. One design had two rings that used the wheel bolt pattern with a piece of pipe between. Looked like a spool piece as used in the pipe fitting trade. Another design was similar but used the square bolt holes in the wheel that normally are used for attaching weights. I've seen both pipe and square tube used for this design. The most recent design that I stumbled across was nothing more than a short piece of pipe with an outside diameter that matched the diameter of the first formed lip of the wheel, approximately 13" with a 12" wheel. The wheels are brought together by all threaded rod. Are there any advantages with one over the other? I like the short pieces of pipe approach the best mainly for its Simplicity.

If the wheels are bolted together solidly, it doesn't matter what method is used.

With my experience (which is limited) if you use a big ring and try and bolt the tires together you do take the chance of slippage. Even if the bolts are tight, if they aren't st the right angle they slip easier. The adapter (spacers with tubing between) is more secure.

Doug - Thanks for the insight. I never thought about the outer wheel slipping.
