I have an old tired 16 hp on a simplicity and I have a very strong 16 hp to replace it with....The simplicity has the large starter/generator and the 16 I want to replace it with has the small starter on the side of the block... Can anyone tell me what I have to do to change this over from the small starter to the starter/generator?? Many thanks.....

Pretty simple. Whether you use the starter/generator or the present gear drive starter, you'll need to install the booster fan from the old engine onto the replacement engine to get the proper driveshaft hookup. This is the pulley that is driven by, and drives the starter/generator. Only two bolts and the screen. Remove the small starter from the replacement engine. Two bolts to remove the starter generator bracket from the old engine and bolt that onto the replacement engine. Then two head bolts to exchange the muffler support/belt tightener bracket on the top of the old engine to the new engine. If your replacement engine is equipped with an alternator behind the flywheel, I'd stick with the gear drive starter.

I agree with Pat. An alternator, if so equipped, is a much better way to go.
