kohler engine swap? Rod?

i'm thinking it was Rod who put a kohler engine into a Montgomery Wards tractor, but i may be mistaken? Anywhos, i have this 14hp kohler engine here just sitting....collecting dust.....posted it in the for sale section, but it appears i either want too much or nobody wants it. ANYWHOS..... It originally came off a huge air compressor, and i'm needing to know what parts i would need to swap out to be able to bolt it into a simplicity/AC tractor? It would most likely find it's way into a Simplicity 700 or 725 as i have just about a whole tractors worth of parts, but i'm wondering what all i would need to do to get this thing to mount up? I know the flywheel would need changed, as the one on it has no place for the driveshaft to mount, but is there anything else that would need changing? carb maybe? Any input would be greatly appreciated, as always :)

The flywheel should be fine. I assume there is a pull start on it? After you remove the pull start, you will see two bolt hole that the starter generator pulley bolts to. Your going to need a pan that will bolt up to the engine and frame, unless you don't care about drilling new holes. Your also going to have to cut the frame so the engine shroud wont hit the frame. The driveshaft mounting holes were already in the flywheel on mine. I had to remove the screen and cut out a circular hole to allow mounting of the driveshaft, since the screen covered that area. It was easy on mine, since the screen was plastic. The engine bolted directly to my chassis thru the original holes. I did not cut the hole in my chassis like Roy did. I just used a hammer and made, essentially a custom formed dent in the chassis, where the shroud and frame interfered. There was still a little interference, so I also put a small flat on the engine shroud, but not enough for the shroud to contact the flywheel. The biggest problem that you will have is refitting the grille and hood to the tractor. The larger engine sits farther forward in the front, so the grill will not re-mount to the existing holes. You can try attaching the rear grille mounts to the front frame holes to see if that will work. I did that when I had a 10 Hp B/S on the tractor. With the current setup that I have, I made mounting adapter plates, that I bolted to the chassis holes, then bolted the grille to them. I think I moved the grille forward 4 inches and upward 3 inches. I also made a mounting plate that I bolted into the rear of the hood to raise the rear 3 inches also. Right now I am thinking that this may not be necessary for a flat bottom engine(Simplicity Type) engine. I think I did all of this when I had the Cub Cadet engine in the tractor, prior to this one. The 14 Hp Kohler is the fourth engine that has been in the 61 Wards while I have hade it. This first picture shows the chassis and engine interference area. As you can see, there is no hole in the chassis. You can cut one if you like. I think someone made a template just specifically for this.

This second picture shows the adapter plates that I made. Lower right of the picture. This is not a very good picture of them but you can see the intermediate plate between the frame and the lower portion of the grille. You can also see that the engine fits into this chassis very nicely.

This last picture shows the engine mounted in the chassis. You can see that the front of the engine sits directly over the front axle where the grille originally sat. You will need to move the grille, but not as much as I have. As I said before, this particular setup was for clearance for a previous engine. The other engine had cooling ductwork on it, and rather than remove the ductwork, I made the grille fit it, so that is why the grille was moved so far forward and raised.

William, I hope this may help you get started with your project. These are pictures I already had on hand from another post. If you need any other pictures taken, just let me know. I'll be glad to help. Do just do like I do, set the engine on the tractor and start fitting things. Eventually there is nothing left to hook up, and the swap is done.

Elon ~ the kohler is electric start and appears to be almost identical to the one Rod posted pix of up above. Haven't had a chance to check out the link to Roy's swap, but will tonight after dinner....thank you for the link :) Rod ~ thanx for the pictures! All the ones you had sent me/posted before of your swap got lost when the PC crashed about a month or so ago :( I'm hoping that the driveshaft mounting point on the flywheel is under the plastic cover on this engine like they were on yours, it would surely make life a little easier! I'm sure i'll be driving you nuts with questions though sooner or later, but at least it will be over time as this project is far from actually starting i think :O
