adamf203 0 Posted March 22, 2007 I just got a Allis Chalmers B-212 as a gift from my uncle. Me and my friend have decided to take it apart and restore it this summer when back from college. One problem we know that we have is concerning the transmission - i can get it into first but it is really hard to get it out of first gear - need to bang it out. Any tips on what it could be and how we should go about fixing it? Also - its the old yellow color right now but we were thinking of painting it orange - but what shade - corporate or persian. All the painting will be done by my families bodyshop so it should turn out nice. Any opinion on the color change?? Lastly, we were thinking about putting a vertical exhuast on it just to be different. How hard do you think that would be and would be more work than we should tackle? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
bob1959 0 Posted March 22, 2007 The transmission is probably in the shifter forks. if it goes into gear easily and won't come out the fork may be binding. I have an old manual that came with one of my tractors and it is wealth of info. This web site has links to the manuals you need. The Allis 212 is the Simplicity 3212 I think. As for changing color you can change to the simplicity colors but the Allis Chalmers tractor were a little more expensive because of the chrome. Of course they are more to restore to original. I personally like to keep things original but it is your tractor and do what you want. Good luck and I hope you enjoy these beast.
HubbardRA 19 Posted March 22, 2007 Are you talking about shifting with, or without, the engine running. Remember that if this tractor has been sitting for a long time, there is no grease in the top of the transmission where the shift forks are. I would not worry about having a problem till I got it running and let the grease get thrown up around the shift mechanisms to lubricate it properly. If your problem is there when driving the tractor around, then you definitely have a problem inside the transmission, probably with the shift forks.
adamf203 0 Posted March 22, 2007 When the tractor is running, I can shift it into fist and it drives, but its really hard to get out of first - im afraid to even use first because im afraid that one time i wont be able to get it out. The tractor had been sitting for probably over 1 year and I have only put about 5 or 6 hours on it since I got it (when I am home from school and it snows) but 2nd and 3rd are fine. adamf203 0 Posted March 22, 2007 If it is the shift forks, what does that entail to remedy the problem?
ZippoVarga 75 Posted March 22, 2007 I had a similar problem that turned out to just be a dry fork and gummed up slides from a tractor sitting for over 20 years. I fixed this by draining the gas and oil and setting the tractor up on end for about 10 miutes. Then I gassed and oiled it back up, put it in third gear on jack stands and let it run at 3/4 throttle untill I thought the gear oil in the rear had warmed up enough to properly lube the top end. I did this AFTER I topped off the gear box with Lucas gear oil. The problem has solved itself with out having to tear into the gear box. Hope you get the issue resolved. goatfarmer 817 Posted March 22, 2007 What does it do in second, or third gear, or reverse?
MikeES 467 Posted March 22, 2007 Adam, I don't have an answer for you. But I had the same problem with a 3314V. It was vary hard to get out of 1st. Well I broke a tube axle during a tractor pull. I had to take the side cover off of the transmission (split the transmission) put a new tube axle in it and it since has never been a problem. I just looked at the shifting forks, moved them and shifted them while the transmission was apart. I could not see anything binding or bent, so I put back together and it must have fixed itself I guess. So it must be something very minor that causes the sticking. ambler 0 Posted March 22, 2007 I would paint it yellow, the B's are more valuble that way.
adamf203 0 Posted March 22, 2007 I hope that it is something minor - im afraid that i might bite off more than I can chew on this one - i dont want to take everything apart and find out that im up a creek on it. 2nd, 3rd and reverse all shift out fine - since this is my first project of mine, im just nervous that im going to do more harm than good. Painting it orange and trying to do the exhaust are things that i just want to do to make mine different than everyone elses - but i want the tractor to run up to its potential. Im willing to try anything - this tractor is a beast and in great shape other wise. I love this thing, especially the hydro-plow.
